Indulgence
Things I indulged in tonight that I vow to give up for the rest of lent (when is Easter, next week?):
1. alcohol
2. rice krispy treats
3. attention from easy sources
4. unhealthy curiosities
5. peanut butter
6. disdain
7. self-pity
Went to an advance screening of Melinda and Melinda tonight -- the new Woody Allen movie. Didn't have such high expectations, but was pleasantly surprised. Not the best of Woody Allen, but entertaining nontheless. I don't want to give anything away, but something that occured to me in the movie, the happy ending to a romance: a plan and it's execution. Along the way of course is a twist or glitch to keep our protagonist on his or her toes, but in the end guy gets girl or girl gets guy and happily ever after soundtrack cues in the first kiss. The tragic ending to a romance: glitch is big glitch and guy ends up with another girl or girl with another guy -- it doesn't matter if they end up "happy" at the end... it's still tragic, because the original love plot was abandoned. Let's think about it. You have your heart set on someone and you go visit your trusted neighboorhood psychic, Madame Rue. How many people would be disappointed to hear that things won't work out with Senior/ita Serious Crush, but will be happily ever after with some unknown face... Or worse! That Joe/Joana Shmoe who you haven't looked at twice, sitting right behind you in class, is going to be the love of you life, instead. Horror of horrors. Why? It's not the plot! You have to reconstruct a whole new script to adapt to this.
8. Waxing on movies about love while drunk.
