i have a confession to make. a few weeks ago when i was on the plane back from israel i watched "Shall We Dance." (after watching "Oceans 12" twice and "Two Weeks Notice" for the second time.)
so admitting that was embarrassing enough... but now i'm going to make it even worse. i'm going to quote from this movie that starred Richard Gere, Jennifer Lopez, and (saving grace) Susan Sarandon. it makes me feel a little better that what i am going to quote are a few lines that was executed by the last of that triumvirate. this little paragraph made the movie for me. it is possibly the only interesting or intelligent moment of the movie. regardless, it's been sitting in the back of my mind since then, and tonight i found it quoted online by a reviewer.
"We need a witness to our lives. There's a billion people on the planet. What does any one life really mean. In a marriage, you're promising to care about everything. The good things, the bad things, the mundane things, all of it all of the time, every day. You're saying, 'your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go unwitnessed, because I will be your witness'."
